Can the Shield of Faith Actually Protect You And Keep You Safe?

in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. ~ Ephesians 6:16

How the shield of faith makes you safe can be illustrated by the fire protection used by wildfire firefighters.

Wildfires can be the costliest and deadliest disasters that can strike nations around the world.

These wildfires are caused by a number of factors. Some of those factors could be lightning strikes, campfires, sparks initiated by a number of sources on dry brush, etc. Additionally, some of these wildfires are intentionally sent by malicious and ill individuals.

Because of wildfires there is the possibility of catastrophic loss of forests, homes and in some instances the loss of human and animal life.

To combat wildfires many states in America employee wildfire firefighters. These men and women are specially trained in the area of combating wildfires. Their job is extremely dangerous because they have to deal with fires that burn out of control, change direction at any given moment, fight these fires in secluded areas where sometimes communication systems breakdown and the reality that a wildfire, because uncontrolled and subject to the outdoor elements, may trap these brave men and women at any given moment.

One of the pieces of equipment that these heroic individuals depend upon is called portable fire shelters. These portable fire shelters are manufactured from aluminum and if in fact the wildfire turns back on the firefighters they are trained to lay down on the ground, utilize the cover of the shelter and allow the fire to move over them.

As one can imagine this is a last resort. In fact one significant disaster occurred in Yarnell, Arizona where 19 firefighters lost their lives during a fire fight even though they had these tents placed over them.

The reality is for a wildfire firefighter that they are not isolated from performing their duty and doing their jobs that they have chosen to fulfill. However, these aluminum tents have, in most instances insulated them from the most horrendous scenario in which a fire turns back upon them.

As Christians we are in this world, but we are not of this world. This reality is clearly indicated in John 15:19 when Jesus says:

If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.. ~ John 15:19

However, like the wildfire firefighters, even though we are not isolated, we are insulated.

We are insulated by faith.

Therefore, We Dwell And Meditate On The Reality That The Shield Of Faith Protects:

The power of faith defeats the world. In Joshua 1:9 we take encouragement as God says to Joshua,

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” ~ Joshua 1:9

This verse follows hard on the heels of the death of Moses, the leader of the Israelite nation. But God says have faith in me, trust me for your continued success as the leader that I have called you to be.

Furthermore, the shield of faith that we raise has a dual purpose.

in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. ~ Ephesians 6:16

  • The shield of faith is lifted by the believer to prevent the darts from penetrating the spirit of the believer.
  • The shield of faith also quenches, extinguishes the dart’s fiery composition.

As Christians we are not perfect.

  • We will be discouraged at times, we will fail others, we will fail ourselves and we will fail God.
  • However, it is important not to listen to the lies of the evil one. Those lies may try to condemn us. They may say that we have no right to be called Christians. The father of lies will say that you are a disgrace.
  • However, believer, lift up the Word of God, claim the blood of Jesus and have faith in God’s Word as specifically commanded in Ephesians 6:16 .

Shield of Faith Provides

In Romans 5:1 we read,

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, ~ Romans 5:1

The Christian is blessed in that through every situation or challenge we can be immersed and protected by the peace of God. As Christians, we lift up the shield of faith and we are protected from these situations, not spared from going through them, but blessed with the presence of God, through faith, that passes all understanding.

As soldiers of the King and our shield of faith lifted up, we are empowered to trust God in all situations. Proverbs 3:5-6 states,

Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. ~ Proverbs 3:5-6

This trust in His providential care of us allows us to know that all things work for good to those who are the called (Romans 8:28).

Finally, the shield of faith keeps us safe. Proverbs 18:10,

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it and is safe. ~ Proverbs 18:10

The Shield of Faith is Perfect

The shield of faith is perfect for the believer in any and every situation. This is because the One that we trust in is faithful and He will never leave or desert us. Remember, we are His children and being the perfect Father, He has nothing but our best interest in mind. The perfection of the shield of faith is seen in Matthew 11:25,

At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. ~ Matthew 11:25

Remember, nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:39).

Also, it is important to remember that Doctors of Divinity have their place in Christianity. Additionally, theology has its place. However, the Gospel of Christ is the pure definition of simplicity. In Matthew 6:33, we understand the command to,

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. ~ Matthew 6:33

Faith in God through the work of Christ is the definition of simplicity. We simply seek the Kingdom of God only and rely wholly upon the work of Christ at the cross of Calvary.

Furthermore, when asked what the greatest commandment of God is Jesus said,

And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’~ Matthew 22:37

The shield of faith is simple. Believe in the One that God sent. Remember, the disciples in the Book of Acts? The disciples were thought to be ignorant and unlearned, but in Acts 4:13, we read that people were amazed at their knowledge, but quickly the verse says that they took note, “that they had been with Jesus.

Finally, the shield of faith is to the believer the power of overcoming.

Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. ~ Luke 10:19

Reader, do you realize that you are at war?

It is important for the believer to understand that they are in a warfare. One of the enemies that the Christian is called to combat are the allurements of this world. Those allurements that this world dangles in front of the believer include those temptations that Christ experienced after He had fasted for forty days and nights. As you will recall he was tempted to turn the stones to bread, tempt God and worship the Devil. Each of these temptations basically encompass all that the world has to offer.

Christ’s response was to lift up the shield of faith. He, who was and is The Word made flesh, responded with Scripture. Our lesson is to be reminded that faith cometh by hearing and hearing by The Word of God. Indeed if this was the response of Christ our Lord to temptation what should be our response?

Like the firefighters in our opening introduction, we too are in this world. There are fires all around us: perhaps some come to your mind?

These fires, without protective measures, would hamper the firefighter’s efforts to extinguish the fire. Indeed, the worst case scenario would be the death of the firefighters if the fires took an unexpected turn back on to them. Without the fire tents, their death would certainly have been their fate.

So pickup your Shield of Faith

We too as Christian are in this world. The evil one has the ability to throw at us fiery darts. These darts are intended to be hurtful and if not deflected would certainly compromise our walk with God through Christ. In essence, a compromised Christian is an ineffective Christian and therefore not embracing the fullness of Christ to be a force in this world to be reckoned with.

Therefore, Oh Christian, take up your shield of faith. It is formidable part of our arsenal to ward off the attacks of Satan. The shield of faith is part of the armor of God that has been gifted to us. Consequently, as the Scripture shares, it is important for the believer to put on the full armor of God.
